Grant Applications, Funding & the FSU IRB
Funding applicants or recipients must demonstrate compliance with federal laws for protecting human subjects, including,
(1) describing, in their applications, how subjects will be protected and,
(2) certifying, before funds may be used, that the FSU IRB has approved of their research.
This page provides an overview of related requirements and guidance. To the right are quick resource links and select other funding agencies' human subjects research (HSR)-related application information.

Below is human subjects research-related guidance for FSU funding applicants and recipients
Three of FSU's largest funding agencies, the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Defense (DoD), have specific department policies about the protection of human research participants. These policies set forth the responsibilities of funded institutions and researchers for protecting study participants. Other agencies may have their own separate policies as well. When applying for or receiving these agencies' support, FSU is obliged to follow those policies and is subject to sanctions for non-compliance.
Department of Defense
The Department of Defense (DoD) Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering establishes policy for DoD-supported human research, enforced by the Directorate of Human Research Protections. Access DoD's 3216.02 policy.
National Science Foundation
The National Science Foundation (NSF) Budget, Finance and Award Management Policy Office establishes human subjects protection requirements for grantee institutions. Access their 2023 PAPPG or 2024 (effective for proposals on or after 5/20/2024) PAPPG proposal and award policy (see human subjects in the subject index).
National Institutes of Health
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) provides a wide-range of grants and human subjects protection-related resources to funding applicants and awardees. Click on the image above to access 2023 session recordings that FSU applicants may find useful. Other NIH HSR resources.
